The MarinePure High Performance Biofilter Media Gems are top of the line biological filter media designed to remove harmful ammonia and nitrite in both freshwater and saltwater environments. As beneficial aquarium bacteria grows and develops on various surfaces, it only makes sense to add for surface area to the inside of your aquarium to encourage this growth. These inert and chemically stable gems are made with open porosity and boast 1,450 square inches of surface area per box for maximum bacteria cultivation, effectively lowering overall tank maintenance as well as being well suited for aquariums up to 70 gallons in size. The MarinePure High Performance Biofilter Media Gems are incredibly versatile, and can be placed nearly anywhere in the tank including under water, in the sump, inside back chambers, inside overflows, canister filters, hang on back filters or any place that has a regular and decent amount of flow around and over the gems. It is recommended to place the gems after the mechanical filtration as this will help keep larger pieces of debris and detritus from clogging the exterior pores. The average gem size is between 18-20 mm and comes in a 90 gram box.

Thoroughly rinse gems in saltwater or RODI water to remove any leftover dust or loose particulate matter.

Thin Bio-Film Technology

The combination of vast surface area and open/interconnected pores allows a thin bio-film to develop. This thin film allows bacteria to flourish because necessary nutrients are immediately available. With the open pores, old dead bio-film is easily flushed from the media and will not plug the media. Water flows through the media, not around as with other denser medias, thus utilizing the most surface area for beneficial bacterial growth
