Gourami are considered a 'Labrynth fish' and are classified in the suborder Anabantoidei. Fish in this order are different from other fish in that they have an organ called a labrynth, which allows them to gulp air and utilize oxygen from the surface. This is an adaptation for living in low-oxygen waters.
