Goldfish are a domesticated species of carp selectively bred for colors and body shapes first bred over 1000 years ago in China. Many breeds have since developed, including the fantail goldfish.

Goldfish have become very popular fish in the aquarium hobby and a lot of misinformation has been spread since then. They are a lot messier and grow to be a lot larger than beginner hobbyists expect, and it's very important to keep them in a large aquarium with a strong filtration system to keep the water quality high and the fish healthy. Goldfish will also benefit from having an addition air stone in the aquarium for higher oxygen content and no heater as they are not a tropical species.

Goldfish typically have a peaceful nature, but it is important to note that they will try to eat anything they think can fit in their mouths. Because of this, catfish species such as Corydoras species and plecos are not recommended tank mates. Most catfish species have sharp, sturdy spines in their dorsal and pectoral fins, and these spines can get stuck in goldfish mouths. When this happens, it's possible to lose both the goldfish and the catfish due to injuries.
